When should CPR begin?
Start CPR when someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Call 911 or the local emergency number, get an AED, and begin CPR promptly.
Does gasping count as normal breathing?
Gasping is not normal breathing. Treat unresponsiveness with absent or abnormal breathing as an emergency.
What should an untrained rescuer do about checking for a pulse?
If you are not trained to check a pulse, do not delay CPR to look for one. Follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions.
What compression rate and recoil are recommended for CPR?
Aim for 100–120 compressions per minute, allow full chest recoil, and keep pauses as short as possible.
What depth and hand position are used for adult compressions?
Press at least 2 inches (5 cm), but no more than 2.4 inches (6 cm), in the center of the chest on the lower half of the breastbone. Place one hand’s heel there and the other hand on top.
How deep and with what hand position should a child’s chest be compressed?
Compress about one-third of the chest’s front-to-back depth, approximately 2 inches (5 cm). Use one or two hands on the lower half of the breastbone, as appropriate for the child’s size.
How deep should an infant’s chest be compressed?
Compress about one-third of the chest’s front-to-back depth, approximately 1.5 inches (4 cm).
What is the adult CPR compression-to-breath ratio?
Give 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.
What compression-to-breath ratios apply to child and infant CPR?
For either a child or an infant, use 30 compressions to 2 breaths with one rescuer, or 15 compressions to 2 breaths with two rescuers.
Which infant compression techniques are recommended?
Use the heel of one hand or the two-thumb, encircling-hands technique. The two-finger method is not recommended because it may not achieve adequate depth.
How should a rescuer give CPR breaths?
After each set of compressions, open the airway with a head-tilt–chin-lift unless a neck injury is suspected. Give 2 breaths, each just long enough to make the chest visibly rise, then resume compressions promptly.
When is hands-only CPR recommended for an adult?
For an adult who suddenly collapses, an untrained or unwilling lay rescuer should provide hands-only CPR: continuous chest compressions while following dispatcher instructions.
