What does an AED do?
An automated external defibrillator checks the heart rhythm and gives a shock if it detects a rhythm that may respond to defibrillation.
When should CPR and an AED be used together?
Use an AED alongside CPR when someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally or is only gasping. An AED does not replace CPR.
What should you do first when someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally?
Check that the scene is safe, check responsiveness and breathing, call 911 or direct someone to call, send for an AED, and begin CPR.
What should rescuers do while the AED is being prepared?
Continue CPR while another rescuer prepares the AED. Pause only when the AED prompts you to do so.
Where do AED pads usually go on an adult?
For usual adult placement, put one pad on the upper-right chest below the collarbone and the other on the lower-left chest below the armpit.
How should AED pads contact the chest?
Pads must stick directly to bare skin and should not touch each other. Press each pad firmly to help it adhere.
How should pads be placed if they might overlap on a small chest?
If the chest is small enough that pads might overlap, place one pad on the center of the chest and the other on the back, following the pad diagrams.
What if pediatric AED equipment is unavailable?
Use pediatric pads or an energy-reducing setting if available, following the AED instructions. If pediatric equipment is unavailable, use adult pads rather than delaying defibrillation; keep the pads from touching.
How should you prepare a wet chest for AED pads?
Move the person out of standing water when possible and quickly dry the areas where the pads will go.
What must rescuers do while the AED analyzes the rhythm?
Stop CPR when prompted, make sure nobody is touching the person, say “Clear,” look around, and confirm the person is untouched.
How does shock delivery differ between semi-automatic and fully automatic AEDs?
With a semi-automatic AED, confirm everyone is clear and press the shock button. A fully automatic AED may deliver the shock itself after its warning.
When should CPR resume after an AED analysis?
Resume CPR immediately after a shock, or immediately if no shock is advised. Follow the AED prompts.
