2 Percentages and Conversions

Learn how to convert fractions, decimals, and percentages, calculate percentages of quantities, and find percentage changes.

What a represents

A means “per hundred,” so 37%37\% represents 37100\frac{37}{100}, or 3737 parts out of every 100100. Fractions, decimals, and percentages are different ways to represent the same quantity.

Convert fractions, decimals, and percentages

To convert between forms, use the relationship between a percentage and a fraction out of 100100, and between a fraction and division.

  • to decimal: divide by 100100, which moves the decimal point two places left, and remove the sign. For example, 42%=0.4242\%=0.42.

  • Decimal to : multiply by 100100, which moves the decimal point two places right, and add a sign. For example, 0.065=6.5%0.065=6.5\%.

  • Fraction to decimal: divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 38=3÷8=0.375\frac{3}{8}=3\div 8=0.375.

  • Decimal to fraction: write the decimal over its place-value denominator, then simplify when possible. For example, 0.375=3751000=380.375=\frac{375}{1000}=\frac{3}{8}.

  • Fraction to : divide the numerator by the denominator, then multiply by 100100. For example, 38=0.375=37.5%\frac{3}{8}=0.375=37.5\%.

Some fractions produce a . For example, 13=0.333…=33.333…%\frac{1}{3}=0.333\ldots=33.333\ldots\%. If a rounded answer is needed, state the rounding; for example, 33.3%33.3\% to the nearest tenth of a .

Find a percentage of a quantity

To find a part when you know the and the percentage, convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the :

part=percentage as a decimal×whole\text{part}=\text{percentage as a decimal}\times\text{whole}

For example, to find 15%15\% of 8080, calculate:

0.15×80=120.15\times80=12

So, 15%15\% of 8080 is 1212.

To find what percentage one quantity is of another, divide the part by the and multiply by 100%100\%:

percentage=partwhole×100%\text{percentage}=\frac{\text{part}}{\text{whole}}\times100\%

For example, to find what percentage 1818 is of 6060:

1860×100%=30%\frac{18}{60}\times100\%=30\%

Identify the carefully before calculating: it is the reference amount.

Percentage increase and decrease

compares the change with the original amount:

percentage change=new amount−original amountoriginal amount×100%\text{percentage change}=\frac{\text{new amount}-\text{original amount}}{\text{original amount}}\times100\%

A positive result indicates an increase; a negative result indicates a decrease. For a decrease, you can instead put the positive size of the decrease in the numerator.

For an increase from $50\$50 to $60\$60, the change is $10\$10:

1050×100%=20%\frac{10}{50}\times100\%=20\%

The price increased by 20%20\%. For a decrease from 8080 to 6868, the decrease is 1212:

1280×100%=15%\frac{12}{80}\times100\%=15\%

The quantity decreased by 15%15\%. The denominator is the original amount, 8080, not the new value, 6868.

For a direct increase or decrease, use a on the original amount:

  • Increase by r%r\%: multiply by 1+r1001+\frac{r}{100}.

  • Decrease by r%r\%: multiply by 1−r1001-\frac{r}{100}.

For example, increasing $50\$50 by 20%20\% gives 50×1.20=$6050\times1.20=\$60. Decreasing 8080 by 15%15\% gives 80×0.85=6880\times0.85=68.
